Contracts, reports, minutes, case files, tax documents and correspondence may contain names, addresses, tax identifiers, bank details, health information or financial data. Pasting them directly into an AI tool may expose information that should be protected first.

What a misplaced personal record actually costs
Pasting a document into an AI tool is a transfer of personal data to a third-party provider. Without a legal basis, and without informing the data subjects, it falls under Article 83 GDPR, which for breaches of the basic principles provides for fines of up to 20 million euro or 4% of total worldwide annual turnover, whichever is higher.
Regulation (EU) 2016/679, Article 83(5). The AI Act — Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 — adds its own obligations, with fines up to 35 million or 7% for the practices prohibited by Article 5, reduced to whichever of the two is lower for SMEs and start-ups (Article 99(6)); those apply to providers and deployers of high-risk systems, not to someone using a writing tool. obscurIA reduces exposure because the data never leaves the device, but it does not replace the controller's own compliance assessment.
